For decades, Donald Trump has shown nothing but disdain and disrespect for the men and women who have served in the military. In 1997, Donald Trump appeared on “The Howard Stern Show,” and when asked how he “handled” making sure he did not contract STDs from the women he slept with, Trump replied:
It’s amazing, I can’t even believe it. I’ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It’s like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider.
Trump went on to call vaginas “potential landmines.”
Four years earlier, Trump had made another comparison between Vietnam and his sex life on Stern’s program:
You know, if you’re young, and in this era, and if you have any guilt about not having gone to Vietnam, we have our own Vietnam — it’s called the dating game. Dating is like being in Vietnam. You’re the equivalent of a soldier going over to Vietnam.
Donald Trump did not serve in Vietnam. He lied about having “bone spurs” to avoid military service.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump told an audience that John McCain was not a war hero because he was captured, and that he (Trump) preferred people who “weren’t captured.” This was not the first time Trump attacked John McCain, having said something similar to Dan Rather in 1999:
He was captured. Does being captured make you a hero? I don’t know. I’m not sure.
Again, Donald Trump lied to get out of Vietnam, and compared avoiding venereal disease to being in the military.
Donald Trump attacked a Gold Star family whose son, Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq. Mr. and Mrs. Khan appeared at the Democratic convention, and Mrs. Khan was too grief-stricken to speak. Trump mused that her silence was due to she and her husband being Muslim, and perhaps Mr. Khan would not allow his wife to talk. He also stated he had “sacrificed” as much as the Khan family because he’d built buildings and created jobs. (source)
A veteran gave Donald Trump his own Purple Heart medal during a campaign event in 2016, to which Trump quipped “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier.”
In late 2017, Army Sgt. La David Johnson was killed in Niger. Donald Trump placed a “condolence call” to Sgt. Johnson’s widow, Myeshia. Mrs. Johnson told “Good Morning America” Trump’s call made her “feel worse.” Mrs. Johnson said Trump struggled to remember Sgt. Johnson’s name, and told Mrs. Johnson her husband “knew what he signed up for.”
Donald Trump lied to get out of Vietnam. He has insulted Gold Star families and prisoners of war, and compared not contracting a venereal disease to military service. He congratulated a soldier whose leg had been blown off for receiving a Purple Heart.
Donald Trump hates veterans, because they had the courage and patriotism to do what he never could: put themselves second. Serving in the military is not a selfish act, thus it would be unthinkable for Trump. Trump uses veterans as props to try and convince his cultists that he cares. But this is a man who has said time and time again that he is smarter than all the generals combined.
Donald Trump has never sacrificed anything for this country. Nothing. He insults and attacks men and women in the military, he sneers at their courage, he makes widows cry. He equates creating jobs in the private sector with losing a son to war. He makes fun of POW’s.
It’s glaringly obvious that Donald Trump hates veterans. Just as much as he hates America.
