The Truth About Obamagate

A few days ago, Obamagate became a trending hashtag on Twitter, thanks to our not-so-illustrious leader, Donald Trump. This started after the DOJ decided to dismiss its prosecution of Michael Flynn. Flynn, you may remember, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia, but he now says he’s completely innocent, and was “entrapped” by the government.

So what is Obamagate? What heinous acts were committed by the previous administration? When is President Obama going to be perp walked down Pennsylvania Avenue for all to see?

In order to understand Donald Trump’s obsession with President Obama, you have to go back to the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner. During his remarks that year, President Obama made fun of Donald Trump.

Watch Trump’s face. He’s angry. Angry that this black man is mocking him, angry that he is the laughing stock of the room. Angry being the butt of the jokes.

Like many narcissistic sociopaths, Donald Trump cannot handle criticism. His fragile ego does not allow him to laugh at himself. And watching President Obama, a man Trump had targeted with “birtherism,” joke about “Celebrity Apprentice” was too much to bear.

This brings us to 2020. COVID-19 is ravaging the globe, and Trump’s response to this pandemic has been awful. The U.S. has over 88,000 dead, nearly 1.5 million cases, with armed protesters storming state capitols, patrolling tattoo parlors, and ordering a Subway sandwich with a rocket launcher strapped to their back.

Trump recently saidAnd they are warriors aren’t they, when you see them going into those hospitals and they’re putting the stuff that you deliver, but they’re wrapping themselves, and the doors are opening, and they’re going through the doors, and they’re not even ready to go through those doors, they probably shouldn’t, but they can’t get there fast enough, and they’re running into death just like soldiers run into bullets in a true sense, I see that with the doctors and the nurses and so many of the people that go into those hospitals, it’s incredible to see, it’s a beautiful thing to see.

Doctors and nurses are trying desperately to do their jobs during a pandemic made worse by Donald Trump’s inability to be anything close to presidential, and he sees this as “beautiful.” And as the death toll continues to rise, as nurses protest outside the White House, Donald Trump realizes he has to go back to the basics: The innate badness of the Black President, Barack Obama.

Obamagate is a shiny thing, a distraction, another sign of Donald Trump’s desperation. It’s a way to reach out to his base, the people who protested against President Obama with horrific racism.

This is what Obamagate is all about. It’s about the bad black man who dared to mock Donald Trump in 2011. It’s about the fact that President Obama’s tweets generate more likes than Trump’s do. It’s about ratings and racism and appealing to the worst of humanity, because Trump can’t run his reelection campaign on anything else.

Obamagate is a shiny distraction for Trump’s most rabid fan base. It’s a lie, like most things in this administration. And while Trump lies, people die.
